When it comes to versatile plantings for the landscape, ornamental grasses are a welcome addition to any garden. Ornamental grasses come in a wide variety of species, shapes, colors and sizes that suit any style garden, any site location and most planting zones.
A particular favorite grass is Miscanthus Sinensus (Maiden Grass) “Morning Light.” Its lovely, fine texture and elegant vase-shaped form affords it the unique ability to add both softness to the landscape as well as drama. At a height of between 4-6 feet and width of 3-4 feet, Morning Light ornamental grasses can be used as a garden focal point or grouped to create a screen or hedge for the landscape. Despite its formidable size, this stunning ornamental grass maintains its upright shape, rarely flopping over.
Want more to love about this grass? It’s drought, salt and dry soil tolerant so it works beautifully in coastal gardens, prairie gardens – even city gardens! It prefers full sun and decently drained soil, but will tolerate partial shade as well as heat and humidity. Deer and rabbit resistant, Morning Light does, however, extend a welcoming invitation to many native bird species.
Morning Light blooms later than most other Miscanthus, displaying small, crimson-colored plume flowers in late summer to early fall, that fade to a silvery-white that look lovely in the winter landscape.
