Winter Landscaping Tips
in Lawn Care
Comments
Winter (December- February)
Trees and Shrubs
- Prune trees as needed to shape and raise the undercarriage (as temperatures allow)
- Cut out infected and damages limbs while in dormancy
- Prune shrubs to allow for penetration of light and moisture
- Avoid pruning spring blooming trees and shrubs
- Use a broom to gently remove excess snow build up on evergreens to prevent limb damage
- Begin mulch applications toward winter’s end
Lawns
- Mark out your lawn edges as to avoid damage to your lawn when shoveling walkways
- Avoid walking on frost and snow covered lawns
Softscapes
- Remove leaves, weeds, debris, etc. from planted areas
- Apply post-emergent weed control as needed
- Check perennial plants during periods of thawing soil to see if roots are coming up
- If they are, gently push them back into the ground
- Install spring bulbs by Nov 30th
- After February 15th, apply pre-emergent weed control
Hardscapes
- Keep walkways and driveways clear of snow and ice. Use non-salt deicers as salt causes damage to the turf and plants. Salt will also prevent the plants from much needed water uptake.
- Driveways, Patios, and Walks
- Inspect for and fix any uneven surfaces
- Consult an expert for assistance
